Women's Empowerment Portfolio

The
Women’s Empowerment Portfolio will help women and girls in Orange County
achieve long-term economic security by focusing on three key areas…

  1. Education, through financial literacy for women and girls.
  2. Support of neighborhood programs serving women and girls that promote sustained economic security.
  3. Creating a forum and funding resource for low-income women ready to build their future and reach their dreams by starting their own business

The Need for the Women’s Empowerment Portfolio

  • More than 10% of California women live in poverty.
  • In Orange County it is estimated that approximately 99,000 women live below the poverty level. 32,000 of them have jobs.
  • Median earnings for women who worked full time, year round, are $40,260 compared to $50,426 for men. Thus, women earn approximately 80 cents for every dollar men make.

The Women’s Empowerment Portfolio will address these needs by:

  • Supporting Financial Literacy programs available to agencies serving women and girls.
  • Providing a forum and funding resource to women-supporting programs promoting sustained economic security through a grant process.
  • Providing a forum and funding resource for women starting their own businesses by partnering with agencies in Orange County to:
    • Provide workshops and counseling on starting a business.
    • Provide microloans to qualified candidates to help them start businesses.
    • Match Women’s Philanthropy Fund mentors with women receiving microloans.
